Description: Here is an important design by Henning Koppel for Georg Jensen in solid teak. This centerpiece is carved from staved teak. Koppel began a collaboration with Jensen in 1945 and continued for the remainder of his life. This bowl bears the correct brand on the bottom. Although most well-known for his designs in silver and stainless steel, many of which are still in production today, Koppel’s teak bowls and serving objects are important design objects that have become highly desirable. Many of Koppel’s’ designs are considered masterpieces of modern design and can be found in important museum collections worldwide.
Henning Koppel was perhaps the most eminent artist attached to the Georg Jensen firm in the period following World War II. Koppel trained as a sculptor and designer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and at the Académie Ranson in Paris, and began working for the Jensen firm in 1945. Breaking from Jensen tradition, Koppel’s silverwork was distinguished by his interest in modernism, made evident in his particular use of abstract and sculptural forms.
Koppel is a pivotal design figure, whose drawings and works are represented in major museum collections throughout the world. He won innumerable awards, including gold medals at the Milan Triennale in 1951, 1954, and 1957, and the ID Prize of the Society of International Design in 1966.
Condition: Very good. No cracks, dents or dings to the wood. But a few small dark spots.
