Description: An early and highly stylized art deco period figure of a skier. This is Hagenauer model number 9099c that appears in a 1930 Hagenauer production catalog along with a photo of this model and model 9099a which is a skier in a different position. This figure looks like he or she is turning on the slope. This is a beautifully and naturally patinated wood, probably walnut, with brass skies, poles, head and scarf that is blowing in the breeze. A fantastic art deco modernist design object.
Hagenauer produced a couple different skiers in different finishes and styles, but we have only seen a few others in this construction and general configuration. This example is unmarked, but there is a small mark on the bottom of one ski that may have been an aborted attempt to stamp this work. There is not much space on this figure for the usual Hagenauer markings. One other we have seen was marked with a very small and almost unnoticeable mark on the bottom of a ski, so this may be from the same production. A nice larger size for display on a tabletop and would grace any skier’s home.
